Where will the course take place?
The course will run in West London at the Greenford Community Centre (170 Oldfield Lane South, Greenford, Middlesex UB6 9JS).
On which day of the week and at what time?
The course will run for twelve sessions on Friday evenings (7 p.m.–9 p.m.) commencing on October 3rd and ending on December 19th, 2008.
For whom is this course suitable?
This course is designed for those who can read and write the Arabic script with a degree of fluency and have a limited knowledge of basic Arabic words and phrases.
Who is the tutor?
The course will be delivered by Dr. Imran Hamza Alawiye, the author of the popular ‘Gateway to Arabic’ series.
What are the course aims?
The course will focus on the speaking of modern standard Arabic in a number of useful contexts. The structure of the language will also be explained to enable the learner to adapt and extend what he/she has learnt to a variety of situations.
What is the course content?
Students will be introduced to regular first form verbs in the past and present tenses. The course will cover various areas of essential grammar such as the gender of nouns and the agreement of adjectives, use of the definite article, attached pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions, demonstrative pronouns, the different types of noun plurals, as well as the rules governing the cardinal numbers from one to ten. Students will be taught a broad vocabulary including items in the home, clothing, food, occupations and nationalities.
What can one expect to achieve?
By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
• engage in simple dialogues and ask and answer basic questions;
• use various adjectives correctly in agreement with nouns, including learning the basic colours;
• achieve greater fluency in reading Arabic texts;
• establish an understanding of how the Arabic singular, dual and plural forms work;
• know how to use personal, attached and demonstrative pronouns;
• understand how to use the numbers from one to ten;
• know the days of the week;
• understand other points of grammar such as the use of the definite article, prepositions and conjunctions;
• have acquired a basic working vocabulary
What teaching materials will be used?
The ‘Gateway to Arabic’ series of course books are used as the basis for this course, supported by handouts and audio materials. Teaching will take many forms, including reading and writing practice, dictation, conversation, classroom activities and homework assignments.
What are the entrance requirements?
Students are required to be able to read and write fully vocalized Arabic text, with or without understanding.
What are the fees?
The fee for the twelve sessions is £120. Fees may be settled in advance or on the first day of the course.
What do I need to bring with me?
A pen, an exercise book or file paper, and ‘Gateway to Arabic’ Books Three and Extension Book One (available for purchase from the tutor).
